The former Secretary of the Navy and U.S. Congressman signs this 3½x2¼ card
Signature: "Geo. M. Robeson/1884/New Jersey" as a U.S. congressman, in black ink, 3½x2¼.
George M. Robeson (1829-1897), a Union General during the American Civil War, served
as Grant's Secretary of the Navy from June 25, 1869 to March 3, 1877. The Union Navy
had come out of the Civil War as the largest and most powerful naval force in the world,
with more than 670 ships and 57,000 men. Except for unrelated incidents in different parts
of the world, the Navy saw no military action until the Spanish-American War in 1898.
Robeson was repeatedly accused of corruption (bribery taking, and diversion of Navy funds
for his private use), but was so adept at covering his financial tracks that he earned the
nickname "Cuttlefish." Robeson, twice an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senator from New
Jersey (1876, 1880), served as a U.S. congressman for the state from 1879-1883. Remnant
on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
