GEORGE M. ROBESON
The Secretary of the Navy signs this letter regarding a leave of absence
Manuscript Document signed: "Geo W Robeson" as Grant's Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 8x10, ruled sheet. Washington, D.C., 1874 December 30. On letterhead of the Navy Department to Lieutenant Murray S. Day, Sokia (sic, Sokkia), Japan. Begins: "Sir". In full: "Your communication of the 19th ultimo is received. When your leave of absence shall have expired, the 20th of May 1875, you will regard yourself furloughed for One Year from that date, if you desire to avail yourself of the same. Very respectfully". George M. Robeson (1829-1897), a Union General during the American Civil War, served as Grant's Secretary of the Navy from June 25, 1869 to March 3, 1877. The Union Navy had come out of the Civil War as the largest and most powerful naval force in the world, with more than 670 ships and 57,000 men. Except for unrelated incidents in different parts of the world, the Navy saw no military action until the Spanish-American War in 1898. Robeson, twice an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senator from New Jersey (1876, 1880), served as a U.S. congressman for the state from 1879 to 1883. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Slightly soiled, faint mounting stains at blank left margin. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at upper portion and on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
