GEORGE M. ROBESON
As Secretary of the Navy, he authorizes a bureau chief to travel on official business
Manuscript Letter signed: "Geo. M. Robeson" as Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 8x10, mounted to hard stock. Navy Department, Washington, 1873 December 19. On official letterhead to W.W.W. Wood, Chief, Bureau of Steam Engineering, Washington, D.C. In full: "Proceed to Portsmouth, N.H., on public business connected with your Bureau and upon its completion, you will return to Washington City and resume your regular duties. Respectfully". George M. Robeson (1829-1897), a Union General during the American Civil War, served as Grant's Secretary of the Navy from June 25, 1869 to March 3, 1877. Robeson was repeatedly accused of corruption (bribery taking, and diversion of Navy funds to his private uses), but was so adept at covering his financial tracks that he earned the nickname "Cuttlefish." Twice an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senator from New Jersey (1876, 1880), he served as a U.S. congressman for the state from 1879-1883. Stain near lower left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
