GEORGE McGOVERN
He types a letter in response to an invite for a luncheon
Typed Letter Signed: "George McGovern" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1969 August 18. On personal Senate letterhead to Paul Anthony, Executive Director, Southern Regional Council, Inc., Atlanta, Georgia. In full: "Many thanks for your kind letter of July thirtieth, inviting me to address the luncheon session of the National Association of Intergroup Relations officials in Rochester, New York, on Friday, November 21. I would like very much to be with you. It is difficult, as you can understand, to foresee what the legislative situation may be in the Senate at that time, but perhaps I can give you a tentative commitment to speak at the luncheon and then confirm it later on in the fall. I do hope that plans for your conference will go well, and I appreciate your interest in having me with you. With kind regards, I am Sincerely yours,". George McGovern (1922-2012) represented South Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives (1957-1961) and Senate (1963-1981). He was the Democratic Party's candidate for President in 1972, carrying only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia against President Nixon. Prior to the 1972 Democratic Convention, he had headed a special commission which revolutionized the process of delegate selection, increasing the importance of competing for delegates in state primaries. Motivated to run for President by his opposition to the Vietnam War, McGovern has also long been associated with the problem of world hunger. He administered the Food for Peace program for President Kennedy (1961-1962), represented the U.S. at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (1998-2001), and became in 2001 the U.N. Global Ambassador on World Hunger. Staple holes at upper left corner. Pinhead-sized ink stain at right edge. Fine condition.
