GEORGE McGOVERN
Typed letter in response to a congratulatory letter from a
fan
Typed Letter signed: "George McGovern" as U.S. Senator,
1p, 6x8. Washington, D.C., 1968 November 19. On personal Senate
letterhead to John D. Buchanan, Markham, Ontario, Canada. In full: "I
appreciate your thoughtful letter of congratulations. I will try to justify your
faith - and that of the people of my State - in my re-election to the Senate.
With kind regards, Sincerely,". George McGovern (1922-2012) represented
South Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives (1957-1961) and Senate
(1963-1981). He was the Democratic Party's candidate for President in
1972, carrying only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia against
President Nixon. Prior to the 1972 Democratic Convention, he had headed a
special commission which revolutionized the process of delegate selection,
increasing the importance of competing for delegates in state primaries.
Motivated to run for President by his opposition to the Vietnam War, McGovern
has also long been associated with the problem of world hunger. He administered
the Food for Peace program for President Kennedy (1961-1962), represented the
U.S. at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (1998-2001), and became in
2001 the U.N. Global Ambassador on World Hunger. Lightly creased at upper
left edge. Slightly soiled in blank upper margin. Otherwise, fine
condition.
