GEORGE MEANY
President of the AFL-CIO from 1955-1979.
Photograph signed: "George Meany". B/w, 8x10
overall, image 7½x9 (one surface). Photo by Fabian Bachrach. Elected
Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1939, Meany, a
former plumber, became its President upon the death of William Green in
1952. One of his major accomplishments was the merger of his union,
comprised of organizations of craftsmen, with the Congress of Industrial
Organizations (CIO), made up of industrial unions. Meany, who became
President of the new AFL-CIO, is noted for transforming the labor movement from
a radical to a conservative one, although his term in office was not without
conflicts. He expelled the Teamsters Union, led by Jimmy Hoffa, in 1957 and lost
the United Auto Workers in 1967 following disputes with its President, Walter
Reuther. Minor surface creases in lower right corner and upper left background
(not evident head on). Fine condition.
