GEORGE MEANY. Photograph signed: "George Meany". B/w, 8x10. Photograph by Fabian Bachrach. Elected Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1939, George Meany, a former plumber, became its President in 1952. One of his major accomplishments was the merger of his union, comprised of organizations of craftsmen, with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), made up of industrial unions. Meany, who became President of the new AFL-CIO, is noted for transforming the image of the labor movement from a radical to a moderate one. Adequate contrast. Minor surface creases (not evident head on) at background above signature and at lower right on suit. Fine condition.
