GEORGE MEANY
His signature on the front of a pamphlet explaining FDR's "Four
Freedoms" to junior-high school students
Pamphlet signed: "George Meany/A.F.L./C.I. O.", 4 pages, 5½x7.
Titled "The Four Freedoms". Elected Secretary-Treasurer of the American
Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1939, George Meany (1894-1980), a former plumber,
became its President upon the death of William Green in 1952. One of his
major accomplishments was the 1955 merger of his union, comprised of
organizations of craftsmen, with the Congress of Industrial Organizations
(CIO), made up of industrial unions. Meany, who became President of the
new AFL-CIO, is noted for transforming the labor movement from a radical to a
conservative one, although his term in office was not without conflicts. He
expelled the Teamsters Union, led by Jimmy Hoffa, in 1957 and lost the United
Auto Workers in 1967 following disputes with its President, Walter Reuther. One
horizontal fold. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
