GEORGE MEANY. TLS: "George Meany as President of the
AFL-CIO, 1p, 8½x11. Washington, D.C., 1979 January 30. On official
letterhead to David Rubin, Indian Rock, Florida. In full: "Thank you
for your letter of recent date in which you request an autographed picture. I am
most appreciative of your interest and more than happy to send you one [not
included] for your collection. With all good wishes, I am Sincerely."
Elected Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in
1939, George Meany (1894-1980), a former plumber, became its President upon the
death of William Green in 1952. One of his major accomplishments was the
1955 merger of his union, comprised of organizations of craftsmen, with
the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), made up of industrial
unions. Meany, who became President of the new AFL-CIO, is noted for
transforming the labor movement from a radical to a conservative one,
although his term in office was not without conflicts. He expelled the Teamsters
Union, led by Jimmy Hoffa, in 1957 and lost the United Auto Workers in 1967
following disputes with its President, Walter Reuther. Lightly creased at top
and left edges. Fine condition.
