GEORGE MEANY. TLS: "George Meany" as President of the
American Federation of Labor, 1p, 6½x8½. Washington, D.C., 1952 September 4. On AFL
letterhead to Norman Thomas, New York, N.Y., a six-time Socialist Party
candidate for President (1924-1948). Meany, a former plumber, was elected
Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1939. He became
its President in 1952. One of his major accomplishments was the merger of his
union, comprised of organizations of craftsmen, with the Congress of Industrial
Organizations (CIO), made up of industrial unions. Meany, who became President
of the new AFL-CIO, is noted for steering the labor movement away from
radicalism, although his term in office was not without conflicts. He expelled
the Teamsters Union, led by Jimmy Hoffa, in 1957 and lost the United Auto
Workers in 1967 following disputes with its President, Walter Reuther. Slightly
creased. Staple holes at upper left blank corner. Fine condition.
