Typed letter signed: "George Murphy" in black felt tip. 1 page, 8x10½. Written on U.S. Senate Committee on Labor and Public Welfare letterhead. November 6, 1969. Washington, D.C. In full: "Dear Mr. Brown: Sometime ago you wrote me a very nice letter and I hope you will forgive this inordinate delay in replying. The schedule has been rather hectic of late and my personal correspondence has suffered as a result. I am pleased that you approve of my sponsorship in the Senate of a movement to abandon the title of "Dove" and "Hawk" in favor of a grand bird, the American Eagle. It was good of you to write as you did and I appreciate your kind comments. I hope my activities will continue to merit your confidence and support. With all good wishes, I am, Sincerely". Post script: "I am returning the card with the piece of dollar attached. It does help to illustrate a point - taxes are too high. G.M.". Dancer/actor Murphy (1902-1992) appeared in film musicals of the 1930s, moving to dramatic roles in the late 1940s. He followed a path similar to that of his friend Ronald Reagan: switching party allegiance from Democratic to Republican, serving as President of the Screen Actors Guild, and winning election to the U.S. Senate from California in 1964. Normal mailing folds. Staple puncture marks in top left margin. Ink notes and mark in bottom right margin. Slight toning. Light surface creases. Pencil notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
