GEORGE P. WETMORE
As Governor of Rhode Island, he declines an invitation to a Republican dinner in New York City.
Autograph Letter signed: "Geo. P. Wetmore/Governor", 2 pages (integral), 9x6¾. Providence, 1887 January 6. On letterhead of the Executive Department, State of Rhode Island, to James S. Lehmaier, New York City, in full: "I try to acknowledge your invitation, on behalf of your Committee, to attend the First Annual Dinner of the Republican Club of New York City, to take place at Delmonico's on February 12th. I regret extremely, that my public duties are such, at this season of the year, as to prevent my acceptance of it. Very truly yours". George Peabody Wetmore (1846-1921), born in London to traveling American parents, was Governor of Rhode Island for 2 1-year terms (1885-1887) and a US Senator from that State (1895-1907, 1908-1913). Election to the final term was delayed by a prolonged 3-cornered contest in the Rhode Island General Assembly. Wetmore had a special interest in cultural affairs, promoting improvements and beautification of the nation's capital and becoming a major patron of the Metropolitan Opera. His Newport home, Chateau-sur-Mer, is open for tours in the summer, a fine example of a Victorian mansion. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Binding holes on the left edge. Corners lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
