GEORGE H. PENDLETON
Printed Autograph Card signed by him in ink (1869)
Printed Card signed in ink: "Geo. H. Pendleton/Cincinnati/Ohio/21
March 1869", 5x2¾ white autograph card. George Hunt Pendleton (1825-1889)
represented Ohio in the US House of Representatives (1857-1865). He was a
leader of the peace faction of the Democratic Party during the Civil War.
The Democratic National Convention of 1864 adopted a platform calling the
Civil War a failure and advocating peace negotiations, but nominated a pro-war
general, George B. McClellan, for President. Pendleton, a "states rights"
Democrat, was added as Vice Presidential nominee to balance the ticket.
Pendleton lost not only the Vice Presidency but also his Congressional seat in
the 1864 elections, but he returned to Washington as a US Senator
(1879-1885). In his single term, Pendleton had one landmark achievement,
passage of the Pendleton Act of 1883, establishing a "merit" civil service
system for federal employees. Slight bleeding of ink at "Pendleton". Lightly
soiled at left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
