He draws and signs this caricature celebrating his great baseball hoax
Caricature signed: "George Plimpton" in blue ink, 5x3 card. He has drawn a figure and ball,
labeling it "Sidd/Finch". George Plimpton, (1927-2003), believed in participatory
journalism. Seeking to improve his understanding of the subjects he reported on, Plimpton
boxed heavyweight champion Archie Moore, played quarterback (briefly) for the Detroit
Lions, pitched to major league hitters, entered golf tournaments, and even played
percussion instruments with the New York Philharmonic. Plimpton also helped create The
Paris Review (1953), and remained its editor-in-chief until his death. In April 1985, Sports
Illustrated published a 13-page report from baseball spring training about a New York
Mets pitching phenom named Sidd Finch, who threw a 168 mile per hour fastball. A week
later, SI apologized for its role in the April Fools' joke contrived by George Plimpton.
Plimpton turned the joke into a popular novel, The Curious Case of Sidd Finch (1987). Fine
