Typescript signed: "George Plimpton" in blue ink, 1p, 8½x11. From the opening of his 1966
book, Paper Lion, which recounts his experiences as a "last-string quarterback" in an
exhibition game with the Detroit Lions. George Plimpton (1927-2003) believed in
participatory journalism. Seeking to improve his understanding of the subjects he reported
on, Plimpton boxed heavyweight champion Archie Moore, played quarterback (briefly) for
the Detroit Lions, pitched to major league hitters, entered golf tournaments, and even
played percussion instruments with the New York Philharmonic. Plimpton also helped
create The Paris Review (1953), and remained its editor-in-chief until his death. Fine
