GEORGE R. STUART and JAMES A. LYONS The two Methodist ministers sign this 3½x2 calling card in black ink Calling Card signed: “Geo. R. Stuart” and “J.A. Lyons”, “his/ [symbol of cross]/ mark” (in undetermined hand), all in black ink on verso, 3½x2. Calling card of James A. Lyons, Pastor of the M.E. Church, South. George Rutledge Stuart (1857-1926) was a Methodist minister. The successor to Sam Jones, Dr. Stuart was a Methodist evangelist, known across the U.S. for his ability to captivate audiences with his religiously-themed orations. He was also the pastor of the First Methodist church in Birmingham, Alabama for 11 years. James A. Lyons was a native of Knoxville and a minister at the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He is the author of The Sunday-school and its Methods (1883). Both signers attended the 1907 Holston Conference, an annual gathering hosted by the United Methodist Church, but it is not clear if this card was signed at that conference. Signers merit further research. Ink smudged near “G” of “Geo.” Lightly toned. Very faint staining on front and verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
