This great little caricature - drawn and signed by Robey on pieces of blank
postcard - is of the Prime Minister of Mirth as a clown and with a bright red
nose.
Self-caricature signed: "Good luck./Geor Robey" in black and red
ink.3¼x2¾. On cut-up blank postcard pieces. George Robey
(1869-1954) was an English music hall star who was known as the "Prime
Minister of Mirth". Known for his song If You Were the Only Girl -
sung opposite Violet Loraine in the 1916 Alhambra Theatre production of The
Bing Boys are Here, one of the most popular musicals of that era - Robey was
also noted for his recruitment drives for Great Britain's army during World
War I. He also appeared almost 30 movies between 1900 and 1952,
including as Sancho Panza in two film versions of Don Quixote (1923 and
1933) and as Falstaff in Lawrence Olivier's 1944 film adaptation of Henry
V. Robey also had a brief career as a soccer player with the Chelsea
Football Club, when he was given an amateur contract after scoring a goal during
a friendly match with the club. Lightly toned, stained and creased. Clip
