GEORGE S. BOUTWELL - AUTOGRAPH SENTIMENT SIGNED - HFSID 56647

GEORGE S. BOUTWELL
Slip of paper signed by the Secretary of the Treasury under President Grant
Autograph Sentiment Signed: "Very respectfully/ Geo: S Boutwell/ Groton, Mass.". 5½x2. Groton, Massachusetts, September 5, 1901. The Act of 1878 required the U.S. Treasury to purchase between $2 million and $4 million worth of silver bullion each month at market prices. This was to be coined into silver dollars, which were made legal tender for all debts. At the time when Congress was discussing this bill, an eight member commission, which included George S. Boutwell (1818-1905), was appointed to investigate the causes of the change in the relative value of gold and silver, the effects upon trade and to report on the policy of restoring the double standard in the United States. Boutwell, Grant's Secretary of the Treasury from 1869-1873, was U.S. Senator from 1873-1877. Edges frayed and lightly toned. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
