GEORGE SAMERJAN
FDC of a stamp honoring Adlai Stevenson, signed by the stamp's designer
First Day Cover signed: "George Samerjan", 6½x3½. FDC honoring Adlai Stevenson, postmarked Bloomington, Illinois, October 23, 1965, 5-cent stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Ink stamp caption below signature. George Eurengy Samerjan (1915-2005) was a post office muralist in the 1930s, working for the Federal Art Project, a documentary artist for the US Air Force during and after World War II, and a prolific magazine illustrator of the 1950s and early sixties. He also served as an art director at CBS radio and at the Los Angeles Times. Samerjan designed three US stamps: the subjects being the Arctic, the Erie Canal and Adlai Stevenson. Stevenson, a Governor of Illinois and twice the Democratic nominee for President, was appointed UN Ambassador by President Kennedy. Serving in that capacity he died of a heart attack on July 14, 1965, and was memorialized in this Samerjan-designed stamp issued three months later. Corners lightly worn. Fine condition.
