Photograph signed: "Sincerely/George Shirley". B/w, 8x10. A
talented performer, teacher and lecturer, George Shirley (b. 1934) was the first
Black tenor to sing starring roles with the Metropolitan Opera (where he was a
leading artist for 11 years), the first Black member of the United States Army
Chorus in Washington, D.C. and the first Black appointed to a high school
teaching position in music in Detroit. The winner of a 1968 Grammy
Award for his role as Ferrando in the recording of Mozart's Così Fan
Tutte, Shirley has performed more than 80 operatic roles with such
prestigious opera companies as the Royal Opera (Covent Garden, London),
Netherlands Opera, San Francisco Opera, Washington Opera and New York City
