GEORGE STEINBRENNER
His signature in blue felt tip on a 5x3 card.
Signature: "George Steinbrenner", 5x3 card. George Steinbrenner III (1930-2010) used wealth acquired as a shipping magnate to purchase the New York Yankees from CBS in 1973. Steinbrenner was constantly in the headlines as a hands-on owner who fired 20 managers and 11 general managers in his first 23 seasons and made many controversial statements to the press. He was suspended (1990-1993) for hiring an investigator to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield, a star player he had publicly berated. There is no denying Steinbrenner's success, however. Under his leadership the Yankees won 7 World Series, and he turned a $10 million initial investment in the club into an estimated $1.2 billion current value. Tired of sharing profits with a cable company, he created the Yankees' own YES network. Steinbrenner was also tolerant of jokes about himself, as shown in a famous Saturday Night Live episode and many TV commercials. Steinbrenner was convicted and heavily fined for illegal contributions to President Nixon's re-election campaign. President Reagan pardoned him in 1989. Steinbrenner retired from his active role in the club in 2006, leaving it in the hands of sons Hank and Hal Steinbrenner. Pencil note (unknown hand) at bottom edge. Fine condition.
