(front and verso), 6x4. No place, "Thursday, June 18", n. y. To "Mr.
Fairbanks/136 Washington St.", in full: "Please send a ream of
shoe paper to my home today." George Stillman Hillard (1808-1879) was
the law partner of Charles Sumner, and a member - with Sumner, Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow, and others in a small social group called the Five of
Clubs. A longtime state legislator, he was US District Attorney
(1866-1870). A skilled public speaker, he gave Boston's Independence Day
oration in 1835, and a eulogy for Daniel Webster in 1852. The editor of the
Christian Register and Boston Courier, he also gave a series of
talks on the life and works of John Milton. Multiple folds. Slightly toned.
Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn and creased, esp. top right corner.
Edges slightly worn and frayed. Stray ink marks on front and verso. Some ink
smeared in 'today' of note, but still legible. Otherwise, fine
condition.
