verso), 5¼x8. Niles Block, School Street [Boston], March, n. y. To C. C.
Hasewell, in full: "I had occasion, some time ago, to write to Mr.
Ripley, the Editor of the New Encyclopedia, and I mentioned to him that you were
a devil of a fellow on history, and suggested the expediency of his securing
your services in the preparation of some historical articles. He wrote me in
reply that he should be glad to have your aid in some of the future historical
portions of his work. How do you feel in regard to the proposition? Do you
converge towards it? Yours truly". George Stillman Hillard (1808-1879)
was the law partner of Charles Sumner, and a member - with Sumner,
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and others in a small social group called the
Five of Clubs. A longtime state legislator, he was US District
Attorney (1866-1870). A skilled public speaker, he gave Boston's
Independence Day oration in 1835, and a eulogy for Daniel Webster in 1852. The
editor of the Christian Register and Boston Courier, he also gave
a series of talks on the life and works of John Milton. Multiple folds. Corners
heavily worn and creased. Heavy surface creases. Toned. Small tear at top fold.
Small tear on bottom right corner. Edges worn. Faint stains throughout. Lightly
soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
