Typed letter signed "George Thomas". 1 page, 5 ¾ x 8, on Speaker's
House letterhead from the Speaker of the House of Commons. June 29, 1976.
Addressed to Mr. Norman Jones, Leicester, Great Britain. In full:
"Dear Norman Jones, Enclosed please find an autographed photograph which you
asked me to sent you. With every good wish. Yours sincerely, enc".
Thomas, (1909-1997, born in Port Talbot, Wales, Great Britain), was born
Thomas George Thomas, earning him the nickname "Thomas Twice". Thomas was a
Labour politician in the British House of Commons from 1945 to 1983,
representing Cardiff Central (1945-1960) and Cardiff West (1950-83), as well
as Secretary of State for Wales (1968-1970). Despite being a Welshman, he
opposed Welsh nationalism, devolution and advancing the Welsh language. He was
also Speaker in the House of Commons (1976-1983), where he gained much of
his fame. Parliament began broadcasting its proceedings during his tenure as
Speaker and, under the unblinking eye of the TV cameras, his call for
"Order, order!" quickly became his catchprase. He was made Lord Tonypandy
after retiring from Parliament. Lightly creased. Folded once and unfolded.
Otherwise in fine condition.
