Autograph Letter signed: "GvL Meyer" as Secretary of the
Navy, 1 page, 5¾x7¾. Scott Circle, Washington, D.C., 1913 February 23.
Pencil note (unknown hand) in upper right corner.On personal
letterhead to "Messers Jackson & Curtis. In full: "Will you
let me know when the Stock of the Ludlow [?]Class is payable? I purchased
200 rights through you. Yours truly". George von Lengerke Meyer
(1858-1918) was US Ambassador to Italy (1900-1905) and Russia
(1905-1907). President Roosevelt used the blue blooded von Meyer for personal
messages to Kaiser Wilhelm II and Tsar Nicholas II. He was Postmaster General
(1907-1909) and Secretary of the Navy (1909-1913). Returning to civilian
life, he was active in the National Security League and the Naval League,
critical of what he deemed President Wilson's inadequate naval preparedness.
Multiple mailing folds. Pencil notes (unknown hand) not effecting signature.
Lightly toned and creased. Stain at lower edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
