GEORGE W. CHASE
Recently retired from the US Congress, he declines to take sides in a dispute over appointment of a Marshall. "I wish to have nothing to do with settling it between competitors."
Autograph Letter signed: "George W. Chase", 2 pages (integral leaf), 5x8. Chaseville, New York, 1855 April 4. To "Dr. J. W. Steruchin {?}, in full: "I received a letter this morning from Hans A. Churchill saying that Mr. N. Robertson [?] has instructed him to assist in appointing Isaac Parker as Marshall of your town & sent him a letter backed by a large no. of leading Whigs of the town. I wrote Churchill & sent him your letter & said that I would inform you that you might write him & then take such course as you deem advisable as I know nothing of the circumstances. I wish to have nothing to do with settling it between competitors and I did not suppose there were any. Please write me what course you take in the matter as early as practicable & write to Churchill our exchange of this. Yours truly". George William Case (d. 1867) was a farmer and businessman who served one term in the US Congress (1853-1855) as a member of the Whig Party. His term had ended one month before he wrote this letter, as he was returning to his private pursuits. His Whig Party was also dissolving, soon to be replaced by the Republican Party. Mutltiple folds. Surface creases. Corners slightly worn. Toned. Some ink smeared, but legible. Fine condition.
