Inscribed Photograph signed: "Best wishes/to L.H./George Simon/27 Sep 05", B/w 2½x3½. Astronaut George W. Simon was born on April 22, 1934 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. After leaving Germany during Nazi rule, he became an American citizen and earned a Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the California Institute of Technology. In 1963, Simon joined the staff at the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory at the Sacramento Peak Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico and specialized in solar magnetoconvection. Selected by NASA to be an astronaut in 1978, he was as a backup Space Shuttle Payload Specialist for the Spacelab 2 mission, serving as communicator to the astronaut crew during that mission. Simon was scheduled to fly aboard Sunlab 1, but the mission was postponed indefinitely. He is a Fellow of the U.S. Air Force Phillips Laboratory and was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame in 2001. Slightly worn at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
