GEORGE W. WICKERSHAM
Making final arrangements for a talk with law students at Western Reserve
Typed Letter signed: "Geo. W. Wickersham", 1 page, 5x8¼. 40 Wall Street, New York, 1922 May 3. On personal letterhead to Dr. Charles F. Thwing, Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. In full: "I am taking the 6:45 train from New York Friday evening, arriving in Cleveland at 8:35 Saturday morning. I have written Dean Dunmore that I should be glad to talk to the Law School students informally on Saturday morning. I must return to New York on the train leaving Cleveland at 11:30 p.m. Saturday night, and I should appreciate it very much if you would be good enough to secure for me a lower berth on that train. Looking forward to the pleasure of seeing you on Saturday, I am, Faithfully yours". George W. Wickersham (1858-1936), a prominent corporation lawyer was U.S. Attorney General (1909-1913) under President Taft. He successfully prosecuted many corporations under the Sherman Antitrust Act. In 1929, he was appointed by President Hoover to head the National Commission on Law Observance and Law Enforcement, which came to be called the Wickersham Commission. It concluded in its final report of 1931 that the federal machinery for enforcing criminal law in the United States was inadequate. He was President of the Council on Foreign Relations (1933-1936). Slightly soiled on bottom right corner. Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly worn. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
