In a letter to a publisher, the English author complains that he
should be paid something for rejected articles, too, since he spends a whole day
working on them.
Autograph Letter signed: "Walter Thornbury", 2p(integral
leaf), 4¼x7¼. Fonthill (England), "Saturday", n.d.. To ""My
dear Wills", in part: "Thanks for the £20 bit of paper, for so many of
mine are rejected & whether you allow anything for them. Pardon my being
[1 word crossed out] practical, but I think each of my itinerant
articles should be paid £1 besides expenses. I lose a whole day. Mr Doggett -
archery -cricket - warrior & Mr. Ridge, I have never had proof I think of
Doggett. Does he write & lecture? Sincerely yours". English author
George English author George Walter Thornbury (1828-1876) was a
journalist by profession, but often wrote poetry, novels, travelogues and art
criticism. He began his career in 1845 with contributions to Bristol Journal
and later mainly wrote for the Athenaeum; his poetry credits include
"Songs of Cavaliers and Roundheads" (1857) and "Historical and
legendary ballads and songs" (1875), and his novels include Haunted
London (1865), Greatheart (1866), and Old stories
retold (1869). Thornbury is said to have died in a lunatic asylum.
