page, 4½x7½. Dorking, England. 1866 June 11. Addressed to "E. Arnold
Esqr", in full: "May I quote one of your Master Johns [?]
in a collection which will be [phrase illegible]. Yours truly".
English author George Walter Thornbury (1828-1876) was a journalist
by profession, but often wrote poetry, novels, travelogues and art criticism. He
began his career in 1845 with contributions to Bristol Journal and later
mainly wrote for the Athenaeum; his poetry credits include "Songs of
Cavaliers and Roundheads" (1857) and "Historical and legendary ballads
and songs" (1875), and his novels include Haunted London
(1865), Greatheart (1866), and Old stories retold
(1869). Thornbury is said to have died in a lunatic asylum. Slightly soiled.
Mailing folds. Pinholes in upper left. Pencil caption (unknown hand) in lower
margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
