GEORGE WASHINGTON CABLE
ALS declining an invitation to an Author's Guild "entertainment"
Autograph Letter signed: "G. W. Cable", 1 page, 8x10. New York City, 1897 April 15. To "Mr. Will M. Clemens", in full: "I am compelled to write you that I cannot take part in the entertainment of the Author's Guild on April 28. I must be on that date in Boston and Cambridge in imperative engagements. Yours truly". George Washington Cable (1844-1879) was a journalist turned novelist who set his stories in his native New Orleans, especially the Creole community there. Although he had served in the Confederate army, his novels showed strong sympathy for the plight of African-Americans, and he wrote essays supporting civil rights. His friend Mark Twain, with whom he shared a lecture tour, called him "the South's finest literary genius" and praised Cable as a writer and as the person with whom to tour New Orleans. His realistic portrayals of southern life, as influenced by its history, foreshadow twentieth century authors like William Faulkner. Toned. Multiple mailing folds. Torn at folds. Corners worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
