GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER
The gifted naturalist and teacher sends Thanksgiving greetings to a favorite student.
Autograph Letter Signed: "G. W. Carver.", ¼p, 8½x11. Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, 1932 November 21. On letterhead of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute to "My very own precious boy, Mr. Davis". In full: "As the Thanksgiving day approaches I am especially thankful for my ideal boy, Mr. Ford Davis. Yours with thankfulness to God." Carver, who developed over 300 derivative products from peanuts and 118 from sweet potatoes, had joined the staff at Tuskegee in 1896 at the invitation of founder Booker T. Washington. Students who showed particular abilities, such as Davis, were favorites of Carver, and he kept in close touch with them. The year before he wrote this letter, Carver's report "Some Peanut Diseases" had been published, prompting the United States Department of Agriculture to recognize him as a "gifted naturalist". Folds, vertical fold touches the"e" in Carver. Lightly shaded at edges, light circular stain near bottom blank right corner. File holes at upper blank margin. Overall fine condition.
