GEORGE WHARTON PEPPER and ETHELBERT TALBOT. GEORGE WHARTON PEPPER (1867-1961) signed this autograph the year before he was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Boies Penrose. Elected in his own right later that year, he served until 1927. A Philadelphia attorney, Pepper was Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania from 1894-1910. Pepper, who returned to the practice of law after leaving office, was also the author of several books, including books on law and In the Senate (1930), Family Quarrels (1931) and his autobiography, Philadelphia Lawyer (1944). Episcopalian clergyman ETHELBERT TALBOT (1848-1928) was named Bishop of Central Pennsylvania in 1898 and settled in the town of Bethlehem. In 1924, the year after he signed this autograph, Talbot was named Presiding Bishop of the Church. Talbot, who had begun his career as a rector in Macon, Missouri in 1873, later served as a missionary bishop in Wyoming and Idaho, overseeing the building of St. Matthew's Cathedral in Laramie, Wyoming from 1892-1897. Slightly soiled, slightly yellowed at lower blank right edge, touching some writing (all legible). File holes at blank left margin. Fine condition.
