GEORGE WILLIAM CURTIS
Signing in the third person on New Year's Day, he declines an
invitation.
Third Person Autograph Letter: Staten Island, New York, 1884
January 1. On personal letterhead, in full: "Mr. George William
Curtis regrets sincerely that a previous engagement for Thursday evening
compels him to decline Mr. Smith's kind invitation." George William
Curtis (1824-1892) spent a year in the Utopian community of Brook Farm
(1842-1843), where he met many leaders of the Transcendental Movement. He
married Anna Shaw, sister of Civil War hero Robert Gould Shaw. Moving to New
York after travels in Europe, he became a prominent essayist and lecturer,
writing a monthly column, "The Easy Chair," in Harper's and
contributing to other journals. He was active in formation of the Republican
Party, serving on President Grant's commission on civil service reform but
declining invitations to seek public office. In the year of this letter,
however, he refused to support Republican Presidential candidate James Blaine,
and was an independent thereafter. Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased. Pencil
note (unknown hand) at top right. Otherwise, fine condition.
