GEORGE WILLIAM COVENTRY, EARL OF COVENTRY VII
The earl signs this fragment addressed to a Mrs. Trevor
Autograph Fragment Signed: “Worcester Dec. Thirty 1829/ The/ Honble Mrs. Trevor/ P.O./ Chettenham/ Coventry” 4½x2½ slip of paper affixed to a 6½x3½ sheet that also contains a 1¾x2¾ printed biography. George William Coventry, 7th Earl of Coventry (1758-1831), was a member of the British peerage who served both in the military, eventually becoming a lieutenant-colonel, and as a Member of Parliament. He was known as Viscount Deerhurst until 1809. Estranged from his father due to his decision to elope with Lady Catherine Green in 1776, the daughter of the Earl of Northington, Coventry spent most of his time with his friend Richard Worsely on the Isle of Wight. He was involved in a certain degree of controversy when he has an affair with Lady Worsely, who later eloped with George Bisset, which resulted in a trial. Coventry married Peggy Pitches in 1783 and the pairing resulted in 11 children, one of the sons eventually becoming the 8th Earl of Coventry. Slight rippling of signature paper due to adhesion. Signature paper and printed bio toned. Ink note from a collector beneath signature paper. Otherwise, fine condition.
