GEORGE WINGFIELD
As President of the Getchell Mine Company, the mine that restored his fortunes after the Depression, he signs a certificate for 100 shares of Capital Stock.
Stock Certificate signed: "Geo. Wingfield" as President, 11x8. Reno, Nevada, 1946 May 1. Certificate for 100 shares of Capital Stock in the Getchell Mine Company at par value of $1.00 per share, issued to Hare & Co. George Wingfield (1876-1959) rose from faro dealer to the richest man in Nevada in a mere five years. He first arrived at Tonopah in 1901 and within a short time had gained control of the gambling concession at the Tonopah Club. He formed the Sandstorm Mining Company in 1904 and, in November, 1906, he and (US Senator) George Nixon formed the Goldfield Consolidated Mines Company. He then moved to Reno, bought the Golden and Riverside hotels and established a chain of 12 banks in western and northern Nevada. He was active in Nevada Republican politics until his death in 1959, never holding public office; he refused an appointment to the U.S. Senate in 1912 and refused a draft for the governorship in 1926. Wingfield fell deeply in debt during the Great Depression. The profitable Getchell Mine, near Winnemucca, Nevada, played a big part in his return to wealth and power. Cancellation holes on bottom half. Corners slightly worn and creased. Ink stamps. Tear on top margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
