Autograph Letter signed: "George Zaharias", 1 page, 5½x8½.
Denver, Colorado, 1948 January 18. On letterhead of the Hotel Denver to
"Dear Fred". In full: "Babe is at the La Salle Hotel in
Chicago. I wrote you in my last letter. How was the press on her being chosen
Athlete of the Year down there? Your press was very good. I'll be here till I go
east. Will let you know. As ever". George Zaharias (1908-1984, born
Thomas Vetoyanis, was a professional wrestler called "the Crying Greek from
Cripple Creek," usually cast as the ring villain. In 1938 he met
Babe Didrickson, track and field gold medalist at the 1932 Olympics, at a
celebrity golf tournament. They married later that year, and George
managed Babe's golf career thereafter, also caring for her during her long
battle with cancer. Football Hall of Famer Alex Karras portrayed George
Zaharias in the TV movie Babe (1975). Bottom edge ragged. Stained at
bottom left edge and top left margin. Two horizontal mailing folds. Otherwise,
fine condition.
