Paris, France, 1926 October 17. To "Dear Sir" In French, translated in full: "I returned for a few days after having worked in Provence [3 words illegible] I will be able to show you the canvases that I brought back whenever you would like to visit my studio. Would you do me the courtesy of [5 words illegible] meet at 31 Boulevard St. Jacques, and I would wait for you there. I look forward to seeing you. Yours faithfully," Georges Leroux (1877-1957) was a French painter whose early work focuses on daily life in the city of Paris and features iconic scenes from Parisian landmarks such as the Moulin Rouge as well as the neighborhood of Montparnasse. In later works he depicts many iconic historical scenes and celebrated literary works. Leroux was awarded the Second Grand Prix de Rome for his work Hérode fait présenter à Salomé la tête de Saint Jean-Baptiste. He then won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1906 with the painting La Famille dans l'Antiquité. In 1924, he became a jury member for the Sociète des Artistes Français, an association for French artists perhaps best known for its annual exhibition, the Salon. He was also given the distinction of chevalier (knight) of the Legion d'honneur in 1926. Lightly toned at edges. Small tear on top edge. Slightly soiled on upper right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
