GEORGINA DREW BARRYMORE
The actress, from whom all the great stage and film Barrymore's are descended, signed this sentiment in New York at the height of her career, three years before her untimely death.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Sincerely Yours/Georgie Drew Barrymore/N. Y. April 4 [18]90", 3¾x2¾ card. GEORGINA "GEORGIE" DREW BARRYMORE (1856-1893) was not the first noted actress from this illustrious family. Her parents, John Drew and Louisa Lane Drew, were noted thespians, as were her siblings John Drew, Jr., Sydney and Louisa. But Georgina, and her lesser known husband, English-born actor Maurice, brought the Barrymore name to the stage. As Georgina Drew, she made her stage debut in The Ladies' Rattle (1872). Moving to New York, she performed in hit versions of Pique and As You Like It before meeting Maurice Barrymore and marrying him in 1876. The marriage was a troubled one, with Georgina canceling one play when she discovered her husband was having an affair with another actress in it. In 1890, at the peak of her fame, she starred in The Senator and Mr. Wilkinson's Widows, both produced by Charles Frohman, who would play a large role in the careers of her children. Forced by illness to leave the stage in 1891, she traveled west for a "cure", but died in Santa Barbara, California. She left behind three children, Lionel, Ethel and John, all of whom earned acting fame. Georgina was the great grandmother of contemporary actress Drew Barrymore. Lightly toned. Mounting residue on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
