GERHARD SAMUEL
Black and white publicity photograph of the German-born conductor and
composer, signed to a fan with best wishes and a musical bar. Extremely
rare!
Inscribed musical quotation on photo signed: "For Sylvia
Davis/with best/wishes/[drawn measure]/Gerhard Samuel", in blue ink,
8x10½. Conductor and composer Gerhard Samuel (1924-2004) studied music in
Rochester, New York before attending Yale to study music with Paul
Hindemith. He played violin as a musician before he began conducting, with
his debut conducting performance being at the Tanglewood Music Festival.
He briefly conducted musicals on Broadway before working as an associate
conductor with the Minneapolis Symphony. Most of his career was spent with
the Oakland Symphony and San Francisco ballet. While his work as a conductor
focused on classical composers, Samuel's own compositions leaned towards
contemporary and expressionist sounds. Corners lightly worn and creased. Light
surface creases throughout, not seen head on. Slightly soiled. Pencil notes
(unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
