German dramatist, novelist and poet Gerhart Hauptman (1862-1946) won the 1912 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his fruitful, varied and outstanding production in the realm of dramatic art." Varying his approach between naturalism to romanticism, he could focus on the situation facing entire social classes (as in The Weavers, 1892) or on the inner life of an individual (as in Drayman Henschel, 1898).
