GERHART HAUPTMANN. Photograph signed: "Gerhart Hauptmann/1936". B/w, 5x7. German dramatist, novelist and poet Gerhart Hauptman (1862-1946) won the 1912 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his fruitful, varied and outstanding production in the realm of dramatic art." Varying his approach between naturalism to romanticism, he could focus on the situation facing entire social classes (as in The Weavers, 1892) or on the inner life of an individual (as in Drayman Henschel, 1898). Photographer's stamp and ink notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Creased, not at signature.
