GERRY STUDDS
First openly gay member of the U.S. Congress, censured in 1983 for an affair
with a page.
Photograph signed: "Gerry Studds.". B/w, 8x10.Gerry Studds
(1937-2006), a Democrat, represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House of
Representatives (1973-1997). As a young aide in the Kennedy White House, Studds
helped to organize the Peace Corps. In 1983, Studds and Republican
Representative Dan Crane were both censured by the House for affairs with
Congressional pages. (Crane was defeated for re-election, but Studds, seen by
his Cape Cod constituents as highly effective in protecting maritime and
fisheries interests, was re-elected seven times.) Studds' relationship with
the page was consensual and was legal under D.C. law, but the Congressman
acknowledged that it was "a very serious error in judgment." In 2004, one week
after same-sex marriage became legal in Massachusetts, Studds married his
long-time partner, Dean Hara (not the former page). After retiring from Congress
in 1997, Studds lobbied for the fisheries industry. Fine
condition.
