GERTIE GITANA. Post Card Photograph signed: "Kind wishes/Gertie Gitana". B/w, 3½x5½. Gertie Gitana (1887-1957), born Gertrude Mary Astbury, was a British music hall entertainer who was a favorit of British troops during WWI. A member of Tomlinson's Royal Gypsy Children at the age of four, Gertie made her professional debut at the age of eight. She made her first London appearance in 1900, and, at the age of 17, topped the bill at The Adwick Empire at Manchester. Gitana's music repertoire included "A Schoolgirl's Holiday", "When the Harvest Moon is Shining" and "Nellie Dean" (1907), which was an instant success and became her signature song. She made her first gramophone recordings in London from 1911-1913, and after WWI, Gitana appeared in pantomime and in musical shows, including Nellie Dean and Dear Louise (she married Don Ross, her leading man in the latter, in 1928). In 1948, ten years after retiring, Gitana returned in a popular "old timers" show produced by her husband. She gave her final performance at The Emprexx Theatre in Brixton on December 2, 1950. Minor surface creases, diagonal crease at the "t" in Gitana. Defects from original negative have reproduced at upper background, which has ink check mark. Mounting remnants on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
