GERTRUDE NIESEN and LEE TRACY
Signatures, each acquired in November 1938, affixed to an album leaf
Signatures: "Gertrude Niesen", 3x1¾, "Lee Tracy", 3x1¾, both affixed to the same album leaf (5¼x4¼). Ink note (unknown hand) on each sheet: "Nov. 1938." Big band and cabaret singer GERTRUDE NIESEN (1911-1975) performed pop standards by all the great songwriters of her era (1930s-1950s). Her stage performances included the lead in the Broadway musical Follow the Girls (1944-1946). Two of her albums have recently been re-released: My Best Wishes (1938) and I Wanna Get Married (1945). LEE TRACY (1898-1968), was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in 1964 for his US President in The Best Man, his final film. (He had received a Tony nomination for the same role on Broadway in 1960.) Tracy, who had become a Broadway star in 1924, had made his film debut in 1929. His long list of feature film credits includes The Lemon Drop Kid (1934) and Sutter's Gold (1936), and Tracy also starred in several early TV series, The Amazing Mr. Malone (1951), Martin Kane, Private Eye (1952-1953) and New York Confidential (1959). In 1948, the year these signatures were obtained, Gertrude Niesen was appearing in her last film, portraying a nightclub singer in The Babe Ruth Story. Lee Tracy who had starred in the 1947 film High Tide, would appear on Broadway in The Traitor in 1949. Wrinkled from being glued. Album leaf slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
