Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Best wishes/Gertrude Niesen". B/w, 8x10. Ink stamp on verso dates signature February 9, 1938. Big band and cabaret singer Gertrude Niesen (1911-1975) performed pop standards by all the great songwriters of her era (1930s-1950s). She was the first to record "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" (1933). Her stage performances included the lead in the Broadway musical Follow the Girls (1944-1946)., and she appeared in several films (This is the Army, 1943). Two of her albums have recently been re-released: My Best Wishes (originally 1938) and I Wanna Get Married (from 1945). Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Light surface marks, mild rippling, and a few spots to border. Otherwise, fine condition.
