GERTRUDE NIESEN
A vintage 4¾x7 candid photograph of the singer sporting bold red lips and a head scarf, acquired from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane.
Photograph signed: "Best wishes/Gertrude Niesen", in blue ink, Sepia toned 4¾x7. Big band and cabaret singer Gertrude Niesen (1911-1975) performed pop standards by all the great songwriters of her era (1930s-1950s). She was the first to record "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" (1933). Her stage performances included the lead in the Broadway musical Follow the Girls (1944-1946), and she appeared in several films (This is the Army, 1943). Two of her albums have recently been re-released: My Best Wishes (originally 1938) and I Wanna Get Married (from 1945). This photograph is from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane, Hawaii natives who moved to California in the 1920's. Francis Zane had a job at the historic Curran Theater and the San Francisco Opera House, which is where he began his massive collection, with photographs and materials ranging from the 1920's to 1960's. The location and luck of his occupation would land him smack dab in the middle of the celebrity world, allowing him to capture some of the most unique and interesting pieces of Hollywood History. Corners lightly worn. Lightly bowed. Faint scratches on image. Otherwise, fine condition.
