Typed letter signed: "Gertrude Niesen" in blue ink. 7¼x10¼. Los Angeles, October 8, 1936. To Mr. Chaw Mank, in full: "Dear Mr. Mank, Thank you very much for sending me your club news. It gets bigger and better every time, and I congratulate you on your wonderful work. I am enjoying my picture work, and hope that you and the club members will come to see 'The Top o' the Town' when it comes your way. I am enclosing my dues, and hope you and your friends, will always be my friends. Under separate cover I am sending you my first photograph of me made by Universal. Very cordially". Big band and cabaret singer Gertrude Niesen (1911-1975) performed pop standards by all the great songwriters of her era (1930s-1950s). She was the first to record "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" (1933). Her stage performances included the lead in the Broadway musical "Follow the Girls" (1944-1946), and she appeared in several films, such as This is the Army (1943). Two of her albums have recently been re-released: My Best Wishes (originally 1938) and I Wanna Get Married (from 1945).
