Partly Printed check filled out and signed: "Gideon Welles" as Johnson's Secretary of the Navy, 7½x3¼. Washington, D.C., 1869 January 9. Drawn on Riggs & Co., payable to "W.W. Corcoran or Order" for $24.64. Endorsed: "W.W. Corcoran" on verso. Two-cent U.S. Internal Revenue stamp picturing George Washington initialed by Welles: "$24.64/Jany 9/1869/G.W." GIDEON WELLES (1802-1878) served as Secretary of the Navy during the entire Lincoln and Johnson administrations (1861-1869). Philanthropist and banker W.W. CORCORAN was the founder of Washington's Corcoran Gallery of Art. With banker George W. Riggs, he founded Riggs & Co. The Riggs Bank branch at 1503 Pennsylvania Avenue, one block from The White House, is known today as the W.W. Corcoran Branch. Folds, vertical fold touches the "d" in Gideon and "s" in Welles. Ink transference touches Welles' signature. Lightly soiled, light circular stain touches printed "Co.". Bank cut touches payee line.
