GIDEON WELLES. Manuscript DS: "G. Welles" as Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 7¾x9¾ lined sheet. Washington, D.C., 1866 June 21. On letterhead of the Navy Department to Chief Engineer William W. W. Wood, U.S. Navy, Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. Begins: "Sir". In full: "Leave of absence is hereby granted to you until the First of October next, with permission to visit Europe. Respectfully". Docketed (unknown hand) on verso. GIDEON WELLES (1802-1878) served as Secretary of the Navy during the entire administrations of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson (1861-1869). WILLIAM W. WOOD, who died in 1882, served in the U.S. Navy for 35 years. In August 1865, less than a year before Welles signed this letter, Wood had established the Department of Steam Enginery at the Naval Academy. Wood's other ties to Maryland included his 520-acre estate, "Jutland", in St. Mary's County. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Slightly soiled. Name written (unknown hand) at lower margin, pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
